9 p.m. UPDATE: Network Slowness

Jan. 8, 2013 - As of 9 p.m., the cable provider has located the point of the cable break and is working to repair it. We have not yet been provided with an ETA for repair, but it may be several more hours. We will continue to see sporadic performance issues with connections between campus and off-campus sites until the repairs are completed, since connections to our other service providers are saturated.

Recap of event: At approximately 2:45 p.m. the University lost connectivity to our two primary research networks and two of our three Internet service providers due to a major communications cable getting cut in downtown Chicago, which is also affecting Argonne and several other universities in Illinois. As a result people may have seen a brief disruption as connections failed over, and we are currently seeing slow performance for off-campus connections because of reduced bandwidth. As of 9 p.m. the provider is working to restore service.
