UPDATE: Network Slowness
Jan. 8, 2013 - As of 4:30 p.m., we have received confirmation from one of our internet service providers that a major communications cable has been cut downtown. The provider is working to restore service but has not yet provided us with an ETA for repair, but it may be several hours. We will continue to see sporadic performance issues with connections between campus and the off-campus sites until the repairs are completed, since connections to our other service providers are saturated.
Recap of event: At approximately 2:45 p.m. the University lost connectivity to our two primary research networks and two of our three Internet service providers due to a major communications cable getting cut in downtown Chicago. As a result people may have seen a brief disruption as connections failed over, and we are currently seeing slow performance for off-campus connections because of reduced bandwidth. As of 4:30 p.m. the provider is working to restore service.
